Caleb Williams Takes Blame for Overtime Pick: ‘Miscommunication’ with D.J. Moore Dooms Bears in Loss to Rams

Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams accepted responsibility Sunday night after a costly interception in overtime sealed a heartbreaking loss to the Los Angeles Rams, attributing the game-ending turnover to a miscommunication with wide receiver D.J. Moore.

The first overall pick’s pass intended for Moore was picked off by Rams safety Kamren Curl in overtime, ending Chicago’s best opportunity to set up a game-winning field goal. Instead, Los Angeles capitalized on the turnover, driving down the field for a game-winning kick of their own.

Williams Explains What Went Wrong on Critical Play

Speaking to reporters after the game, Williams broke down the play that ultimately cost the Bears a crucial victory.

“I got to go back and watch it, haven’t seen it and don’t really know, but in the moment, I saw the front-side safety down, front-sided concept,” Williams explained. “Ended up getting hemmed up a little bit and so moved on and had D.J. going over top over all of it.”

The miscommunication came down to route execution and timing—two elements that can make or break plays in critical moments.

“Just a miscommunication between him and I,” Williams said. “Tried to flatten him off under the safety and he kept it vertical, from what I saw in the moment.”

Rookie QB Vows to Learn from Painful Lesson

The loss marked Williams’ first overtime game as an NFL quarterback, and he didn’t shy away from accountability in the aftermath.

“It’s tough. In these moments you feel that you let your team down,” the former USC standout said. “It’s a good lesson learned for us, first time being in this situation for me and for us as a team.”

Despite the disappointment, Williams maintained an optimistic outlook about the Bears’ future.

“I’m excited for what’s to come, but obviously going to go back and watch this and figure out how I can be better,” he added.

High Stakes Miss Proves Costly for Chicago

Had the connection to Moore been successful, the Bears would have been well within field goal range to potentially win the game. Instead, Curl’s interception shifted momentum entirely to the Rams, who took advantage of the short field to march into their own field goal range and secure the victory.

The loss continues a challenging stretch for the Bears as Williams navigates the growing pains of his rookie season in the NFL.
